A Top Gun 2 trailer is a long ways off. However, a Top Gun 2 trailer, along with an actual movie, will actually become a reality before long. In a time where practically every 70’s, 80’s and even 90’s movie gets a sequel or a reboot, one of Tom Cruise’s first blockbusters will get the sequel treatment. But whether it will star Cruise, or just have him pass the torch to a new Maverick, is still uncertain. By the time a Top Gun 2 trailer is released in a few years, there should be a better idea.
Director Tony Scott confirmed his sequel plans on Hitfix, while he makes the publicity rounds for his latest film Unstoppable. Although Scott has other movies on his docket, he is planning to return to the danger zone within the next few years.
When a Top Gun 2 trailer is released, it should reveal a different film than the 1986 original. For one thing, Scott’s directorial style has become much more hyperkinetic than it was 25 years ago. And no matter if Cruise is starring or not, the world that Maverick, Iceman and Goose inhabited is nearly gone anyway.
Scott shared that the movie will explore “the end of the era of fighter pilots” now that drones can do the job more efficiently. Nowadays, computer geeks that can “play war games” are more capable of flying drones, and replacing human pilots. However, this is just the kind of environment for some lone human to go Maverick against the new system.
Well before a Top Gun 2 trailer, script and filming schedule is formed, Scott will be doing research in Fallon, Nevada. However, the main question that will surround him, and writer Christopher McQuarrie, is what Cruise and Maverick are doing – if anything.
McQuarrie e-mailed New York Magazine to say “There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role.” Yet studios might need to disagree, since Cruise is not the big star he used to be. Back when he first appeared as Maverick, he wasn’t an established box office star either, but it was clear he would be soon. Whether this will put him back there, and whether he will get the chance, is more uncertain.
Of course, since this movie is still a long way from being filmed, Cruise has time to become powerful again beforehand. Yet if he isn’t the star, and if another Maverick is taking his place, that new star will be hounded by Cruise’s shadow. In that case, the first Top Gun 2 trailer would be the first chance to prove there’s room for other Mavericks in this franchise.
Would a Top Gun 2 recapture Cruise’s old glory, or try to form new glory with fresh hands – or has its time passed either way? It will be a few years before Scott fully answers some of these questions.
