Reading to your children is not only extremely important for their learning skills, but is also a fabulous way to spend time with them. I can’t imagine parenting without a lot of good story time reading. Grab some big fluffy pillows and warm blankets and snuggle up together with my top ten favorite children’s books for children ages 3-6.
This story about a very imaginative Siamese kitten will have you giggling and dreaming up wild adventures of your own. He pretends to be a great super hero Chihuahua and fights an evil bumble bee. There are now a few other books staring this adorable kitten and they do not disappoint.
Little Critter Storybook Collection
I remember reading these books as a child and knew that I had to read them to my child. Little Critter books have a lesson in each book that is relatable and easy for children to understand.
Mr. Men and Little Miss
Another set of childrens books from my childhood that my children now adore. These small books are perfect for smaller hands to hold. Each book tells a story about a different character. Our favorites are Little Miss Bossy, Mr. Messy, and Mr. Grumpy. Each book shares a quick lesson with children to help them be their best.
Brown Bear, Brown Bear
Eric Carle brings colorful animals to life in this book. Children can easily learn the words and before long are reading them with you.
The stories from the Berenstain Bears collection can really help out with those tough parenting moments. One of our favorites, “Green Eyed Monster” helps children learn about jealousy and how to cope with it. Other favorites include “Too Much Junk Food” and “Learn About Strangers”.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Follow this colorful caterpillar as he eats his way through many different foods. When he is full, he goes to sleep in his cocoon. This is a great way for younger children to learn about different foods and for all children to learn about the life cycle of a caterpillar into a butterfly.
A little girl doesn’t know how to use her words after she has lost her favorite toy. Her mommy realizes that she is missing Knuffle Bunny and the family goes on a search to find it. Teaching children to use words is a big part of parenting. and this book may be able to help you teach just that.
Meeow and the Big Box
Meeow is a black cat and goes on a variety of adventures in many different books. Meeow is great for younger children because many learning skills are represented. Children read and learn about colors, placement, numbers, and shapes all while reading about a black cat.
How to Speak Moo
Children love reading and seeing cows doing silly things like riding skateboards. This book not only provides a good laugh, it also teaches children rhyming with its sing song like words. It is one of my children’s favorite books.
5 Minutes of Peace
When parenting has its tough moments, most moms and dads just want 5 minutes of peace. This cute story is about an elephant mommy that just wants to soak in a bubble bath for a few minutes without her elephant kids bothering her. Not only is this a great, and familiar, story for parents, the kids enjoy it too. You can even slip in a little message about how nice it would be if mommy could be left alone for just a few minutes.
