Bristol Palin, Tom DeLay, and Tucker Carlson are the well-known triumvirate of Republicans who have graced the stage of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” But where are the Democrats? Now in its eleventh season, the perennially popular dancing program has yet to let the judges sink their critical teeth into any hip-swinging, toe-tapping, arm-waving, skirt-wagging, left-leaning liberals.
Wild Things and Gorilla Suits – The Republican Waltz
Now I’m not saying it wasn’t good television to hear Bruno exclaim “What an awful mess!” when commenting on Tucker Carlson’s first, and only, performance in season three. Then there was Tom DeLay dancing to, dare I say it, “Wild Thing” in season nine. Quick! Everybody run from the building! And poor Bristol tried to show her fun side this season by dancing in a gorilla suit. Haven’t seen one of those since “The Monkees” was a hit show. But isn’t it time to see progressives making fools of themselves on the dance floor?
Top Three Democratic Contenders for “Dancing with the Stars”
Surely the Democrats have something that can equal this level of entertainment. And while there are literally hundreds to choose from – 50-plus in the Senate, 200 give or take a few in the House – not to mention former pols, I’ve narrowed it down to a top three of Democratic contenders for “Dancing with the Stars” that would be fun to watch if not hard to beat.
1. Al Gore – The negatives: he’s stiff and awkward which will make it hard for him to dance. The positives: he’s stiff and awkward, which will make it fun for us to watch him dance.
2. Al Franken – Who’d be better? The Senator from Minnesota is a serious politician these days, but I vote to see him reprising his role from “Saturday Night Live” as Stuart Smalley doing the 12-Step! Not to mention, he’s good enough, he’s smart enough, and doggone it, people like him.
3. Nancy Pelosi – Now c’mon. She may not be the most popular politician around, but she’ll be out of a job soon. Let’s give the soon-to-be former House majority leader a shot. Heck, she’s already got the heels and cosmetics to get started!
