Sarasota is a city in Sarasota County located in the southwest coast of Florida, south of Tampa Bay, and north of Fort Myers.
The city’s historical houses, monuments, and landmarks encompass circuses and sports complexes; thus, giving it the title “Circus Capital of the World.”
Sarasota School of Architecture
The widely known Sarasota School of Architecture boomed through the works of Ralph Twitchell and his partner Paul Rudolph. Twitchell, an early Sarasota architect, is credited by most people as the “grandfather” of the Sarasota School of Architecture. Rudolph later on established his own firm and ultimately became the Dean of the School of Architecture at Yale University.
Historical Houses in Sarasota
Many of the luxurious historic residences during the 1920s boom period along Sarasota Bay’s northern shore survived to this day. Most of the popular ones are open to the public.
The Cà d’Zan Mansion, a 1925 Sarasota residence of Mable and John Ringling, is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This palatial mansion features 56 incredible rooms filled with art and original furnishings. Literally meaning “House of John” in the Venetian dialect, the Cà d’Zan showcases Venetian Gothic architecture.
The Ella Dulla Westermann Tenant House near the historic Burns Court area is an interesting bungalow painted in rustic green with a lighter green and orange trim, tin roof, and red brick chimney.
The Harvey House is a prominent landmark in the Sarasota neighborhood of Sapphire Shores. Twitchell’s own house, built in 1942, exhibits an open plan, flat roof, and broad overhands with large expanses of glass and stacked Ocala Block walls.
