If you are moving to the beautiful state of Montana and are a commercial driver, you will need to transfer your out-of-state CDL to a Montana CDL. The process of doing this transfer is overseen by Montana Department of Justice Driver Services. Take note, this article was written in 2010, thus you will want to contact the Montana Drivers Services office nearest you to determine if any information has changed.
Steps to Transfer an Out-of-State CDL to a Montana CDL:
The first thing you will need to do before you visit a driver licensing office is gather the proper documentation. You will need your current CDL, Montana residency proof (such as a utility bill, lease agreement, pay stub, etc.), authorized presence proof as well as your social security card. After you have gathered these materials, you will need to obtain your Department of Transportation medical card. This card must be signed by a licensed physician, and it can be done in your originating state or in Montana.
After you have gathered all of the above mentioned materials, you will need to locate a local Montana Driver Services. You can make an appointment at the location of your choice by visiting the Montana Department of Justice website, a link to this section of the website is located in the Resources section of this article.
Upon your arrival you will need to fill out the CDL application and include all of the aforementioned documentation. You will not need to complete written or road test examinations if your current CDL is valid; however, if it is expired you may be required to take written examinations and possibly road test exams. If you require a hazardous materials endorsement, you will be required to take a written exam as well as undergo a criminal background check (fingerprint). Once you clear all exams and background tests, you will need to pay the Montana CDL licensing fee, which varies according to age.
