Its completely cliche to say Transformers: War for Cybertron for the PC was “more than meets the eye” when I picked it up. The last Transformers game I played, and for that matter most movie-to-games aren’t very spectacular.
Thankfully, with a storyline separate from the movies it doesn’t immediately doom the game from the start. Most movie-to-games suffer horrible story changes. Things where a major part of the story in a movie might be switched out in order to make an action sequence in a game. Leaving both movie fans and gaming fans wondering through colorful words in their head.
You know one thing from the start. There is a war between the Autobots and Decepticons over their home world of Cybertron. The game features a campaign mode for both factions. Once you pick a side to start your campaign, your mission, and your Transformer your thrust into a very detailed Cybertron. The visuals of the designed environment sometimes have you just standing still just to spot what the transforming world will do. There’s no low-quality work in graphics either. Combat effects work as intended. There’s no huge issues with clipping or animations.
As you continue playing through the game the voices and sounds become part of the motivation to see what happens next. Voice-overs are done very well. Fans will recognize the voice of Optimus Prime as Peter Cullen. Dialogue between the Autobots and Decepticons in-game can be entertaining. You’ll get to hear Megatrons minions bicker back and forth resulting in funny replies from Megatron threatening ways to permanently end their arguments. It adds in perfectly to describe the characters of storyline.
Now for the real reason your reading this… How does it play? Transformers: War for Cybertron sports an increasingly popular over-the-shoulder view. You have many weapons to be picked up in each level. Types of weapons range from assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, and chargeable cannons. Oh yea, lets not forget the option of tearing a mounted cannon off its brackets and blasting anyone unfortunate enough to stand in your way to scrap metal. We must also not forget…You can transform! Depending on your Decipticon or Autobot of choice you will transform into vehicles that have a default load-out of machine guns, or missiles. Now you might not transform into a Chevy sports car, but the player will be able to push the speed limit in many short but sweet chase scenes and exciting jumps through the transforming levels of Cybertron.
Boss battles entertain very well. You’ll have plenty of time to enjoy fighting huge cannon wielding transformers or buffed up Decepticons. Perfectly designed to have a strength and weakness but not be an annoying puzzle to figure out. Find the right target and commence destruction. If you like multi-staged action oriented boss battles with lots of explosions you will not be disappointed.
The story of the civil war of Cybertron will take you through the capitol city of the Autobots and though Decepticon jail cells in vivid detail. The War for Cybertron will present enough of a challenge to make sure your paying attention. But nothing frustrating, annoying or anything that will make you want to chuck your mouse across the room. You will delve into a character story of Optimus Prime and get a visual history lesson of the Autobots and Decepticons. For someone who had no expectations and took a chance on this game it was a pleasant surprise. If your a fan of anything Transformers…You won’t be disappointed. So pick a side, and choose your weapon. The War for Cybertron is on.
