The Greenbrier Resort…a name which has meant luxury and classic beauty for over 232 years has been a beacon for the upper epsilon of society who have traveled to relax, play and mingle with the “Right People” for generations. Located in White Sulfur Springs, WV, The Greenbriar is attempting to keep the beauty and charm of the old, yet draw guests who expect more than a game of croquet on a manicured lawn, with tea being served promptly at 4:15pm each day. Think of an ideal activity for each member of an active family and it seems to have appeared at the Greenbriar over the past several years!
The Main Lobby
From the moment you enter the 6,500 acre resort, you’re greeted with the beauty and hospitality that has lured visitors for over two centuries. Sometimes referred to as the Old White, your first glimpse of the stately hotel makes you immediately think of the White House on steroids! Upon entering the main lobby (there are 10 lobbies throughout the resort!), the grandeur and elegance is awe-inspiring. From the sweeping Grand Staircase, the timeless beauty of the black and white marble floor to the stately white columns and fireplaces, there is much for the eyes to take in, yet the room is refined and elegant.
Rooms And Suites
Having spoken to several people who’d stayed at the Greenbriar before, we had asked for one of the newly redecorated rooms (We’d been told the older rooms were in poor shape). We found our room to be average in décor and size for the price paid. We later had a peek at one of the suites which I feel wasn’t worth the additional price. But we didn’t come for the room; We came for the adventure and activities!
With the number of activites available at the Greenbriar, it would be difficult (and expensive since a fee is charged for each.) to do them all. But I would recommend the Falconry Academy, due to its uniqueness. It is in fact a falconry demonstration but is fascinating and fun. The falcons are stunning birds and what they do is amazing! With four world class golf courses (they now host the PGA Greenbriar Classic), the next thing you should plan is at least one day for golf. But horseback riding or whitewater rafting would be great too. Oh, and there’s clay shooting to try as well as fantastic canopytours. The Greenbriars latest addition is a casino which opened during the summer of 2010 with much fanfare. Oh, and let’s not forget the paintball course, the Greenbriar Off-Road Driving School or Greenbriar’s world-class spa. In all, I counted well over 37 activities. There is definitely something for every age and taste!
The Greenbriar is truly an amazing travel destination but with it comes some rather big prices. My suggestion is to do your homework and carefully select one activity for each family member. Yes the décor is rather dated in the 1940’s realm as far as color schemes/furnishings, but the true beauty lies in its timeless elegance and architectural design. The Greenbriar is a place everyone should visit at least once in their life. But don’t come unless you want to relax, have fun and adventures, eat delicious meals, and be with wonderful people all day!
