Are you ready to turn that trash into cash? Need extra income these days? Most people do, but are unsure of how to make more money. Recycling is quickly becoming one of the most favored sources of secondary household income. Now I am not talking about recycling your cans and bottles here. I am explicitly speaking of making real income from recycling metals, wires, and motors found in electrical items. Let’s take a step by step approach to each item. Then later I’ll explain how and where you take them to be recycled for cash.
Wiring is a specialty item in recycling. I mean any kind wire that comes from an electrical item such as an appliance or computer. Simply take a pair of wire cutters and cut the wire free from the appliance. Then cut the plug off the other end. Wire is not something you will probably have a lot of right away. So make a special bin or bucket for it. Collect it over the period of a month or so. When your bucket is full, then you can bring it in to be recycled. Since wire is a specialty item the price per pound will be higher than that of weighted metals.
Regular metals are priced per pound. You need to gather weight to get a good payday out of this. Generally if you can gather one thousand to fifteen hundred pounds in your truck, you should clear a little over one hundred dollars for the day. Even though it sounds like a lot of work, it really isn’t. You simply drive around your area and throw any objects that are made of metal into the back of your truck. Do this until your truck bed or trailer is full. Then bring it in to be recycled for cash. A full load takes about four to five hours to find. You need to look on all sidewalks, in dumpsters, and outside businesses. Think of things that have a lot of weight such as air conditioners, heaters, and oil tanks. Make a trip to your local air conditioning and heating suppliers. Explain that you recycle and would be happy to remove any old units they come across. Leave a card with your name and number, so they can contact you in the future.
If lifting is a problem then simply take your time, and collect items you can lift. Strollers, lawn chairs, patio furniture, and any other small metal items add up in quantity. If your load is being made with light items try to flatten the item with a hammer to leave as much room as possible in your truck for more items. Be sure to wear a weight belt or back brace when lifting. Even light items can wear on your back after a couple of hours.
Now special metals are supreme. They have the highest price paid per pound. They include aluminum, copper, brass, and tin. Check all of the items you pick up for parts that contain these metals and remove them. Crush them if possible and make a separate bin for them. To make sure it is a specialty metal you will need a magnet. If the magnet is not attracted to the metal then it is a specialty metal. Most plumbing supplies, leaders and gutters, and beach chairs are made of aluminum or brass. Try to get to know your metals. It will make a large difference in your payout.
If you work with a partner then you will be able to tow cars in for recycling. Junk cars can be located all over. Just look for an old car that looks like it has been sitting around for a while. See if it has no plates on it. Then approach the owner and offer him anywhere from seventy five to one hundred dollars to tow their car away. You will make three times that amount when you recycle the vehicle. Make sure they have not removed any parts from the car. When you get there you can remove the battery and recycle that separately. Car batteries can usually be recycled for about five dollars a piece. Collecting them is a worthwhile endeavor.
Old catalytic converters are very profitable items to recycle. They have high quality platinum inside of them. You can go to your local mechanic and tell him you will purchase each old catalytic converter that he saves for you. Give him about fifteen dollars for each one. Then you can recycle them for about sixty dollars a piece. Not a bad return on your investment.
Now that you have separated all of your specialty items, and have a full load of metal, it is time to recycle them. Go online to search for the closest metal recycling plant in your area. You will need your photo identification to receive your tax id number from them. You will use this number each time you recycle at their plant, and need it to claim taxes at the end of each year. Recycling really brings in a lot of money, so it is considered self business ownership in the eyes of the state. If you manage to make some good relationships with business owners in your local area, then you can develop a specified route for each day of the week for pick up. Recycling can be used as side income, or can become a full time source of income. It all depends on you. You can make however much you want from this business.
