Some people just don’t like glitter. That is all well and good but glitter nail polish is a huge trend right now and some of us love it. Glitter nail polish can be a scary thing for us lovers of all things sparkly. I know a lot of people who avoid wearing glitter nail polish for the sheer fact that it can be absolute torture when it comes time to remove it. Often times glitters can easily be peeled off of the nails in sheets, which is quick, but VERY unhealthy for your nails. Scrubbing your nails with remover, over and over can also be very unhealthy and very drying to your nails and cuticles. Glitter can scratch your nail as you’re scrubbing away at it and leave you with less than desirable looking tips.
Luckily, I have a solution! There is a way to safely remove the glitter from your nails without destroying them. It’s quick and easy too. No more struggling to remove glitter polish when you use the foil method! Here is a tutorial on how to quickly and safely remove glitter nail polish with much less effort using the “foil method”.
Before you start you will need a few materials. You will need an acetone based nail polish remover (for best results), 10 cotton balls, pads, or felt squares, whichever you prefer, and 10 strips of aluminum foil. The foil should be cut into strips of about 2 inches by 6 inches.
I prefer to do each hand one at a time as it can be hard to maneuver and prepare your other hand while you have fingers full of foil. The whole process should take about 10-15 minutes tops. Honestly, removing glitter with just cotton balls and remover would take me a half hour, sometimes even longer depending on how many coats of glitter I had slathered on. You should find this foil method saves you a lot of time in the end.
Start by soaking a cotton ball, pad or felt square with acetone nail polish remover. Be generous and make sure it is very wet. Lay it on top of your nail. Take a strip of your foil and place one edge over your soaked cotton ball. You want to lay it across length wise so you have enough foil to wrap it around your nail a couple of times. Leave a small bit of foil hanging over the tip of your nail and then wrap your nail completely with the foil. Squeeze the edge that is hanging over the tip and twist it to seal it onto your finger. Try your best to get a nice tight seal, so air doesn’t get inside. Repeat the process with the rest of the nails on your one hand.
When all five of your fingers are foiled, sit back and wait 3-5 minutes. The length of time can vary depending on how effective your nail polish remover is and how many coats of glitter you used. 3 minutes is usually long enough for 1-2 coats of glitter while I’d wait 5-6 minutes if you have 3 or more coats to remove.
When the time is up, choose a finger and grip the foil where the cotton is over your nail. Apply a small amount of pressure and then twist and pull the whole thing off, pad/cotton included. Your glitter nail polish should come off completely with that one twist and pull motion. Repeat this step on the rest of your fingers. Then, go back and repeat the entire process on your other hand.
There you have it! A quick and easy method for removing tough glitter nail polish. If your foil strips haven’t split or torn you can straighten them back out and re-use them for your next removal instead of throwing them out.
