Authorities report that there was fatal shooting in a robbery attempt at a post office in Henning, Tennessee this morning. Current reports are that two females postal employees have been killed.
The AP is reporting that Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department told them that two female employees were shot dead Monday morning in what was apparently a robbery attempt at the Henning post office. Police are currently searching for a maroon Chevrolet Malibu believed to have two men inside.
Henning, a small community in western Tennessee, is located about 50 miles northeast of Memphis, and is known as the hometown of “Roots” author Alex Haley.
This is the third fatal shooting at a post office in the U.S. since 2006. The previous two were in Goleta, California in January, 2006 and in Baker City, Oregon in April 2006. This shooting in Tennessee breaks a more than four year period of no shootings at post offices, the longest gap since the mid 1980s when the phenomenon became of note.
The American Postal Workers Union reported that the two women slain were a clerk and a rural carrier associate. The names of the women have not yet been released.
The hunt for the two suspects is ongoing and no arrests have been made yet. The U.S. Postal Service is offering a $25,000 reward for any information resulting in an arrest and conviction.
