Tybee Island, Georgia is a whimsical paradise during the holiday season. Winter is my favorite time of the year on this beautiful island near Savannah, Georgia.
From the Tybee Island Holiday Celebration parade and the annual Christmas Caroling Trolley to the annual tree lighting celebration, “Lights on for Tybee,” it’s easy to get into the holiday spirit while strolling the island.
Here are a few must see things on Tybee Island during the holiday season:
No. 1: Visit the Fort Pulaski for the annual Candlelantern tours. Volunteers recreate the Confederate Nog party of 1861.
No. 2: Visit one of the several churches on Tybee Island for their special Christmas services. All Saints’ Episcopal Church, the Chapel By the Sea Baptist Church, Trinity Chapel United Methodist Church and St. Michael’s Catholic Church all have holiday services.
No. 3: Visit theTybee Island Light House. Although the 145 feet tall Lighthouse is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day, you can visit during the holiday season. They are open every day except Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Visitors climb178 steps to get to the observation deck.
No. 4: Visit the beach. I love the cool waters and sand between my toes during November, December and January. You can rent a kayak or bike to explore the Atlantic Ocean or land.
No. 5: After enjoying the laid-back holidays on Tybee, take the quick 20 minute drive past salt marshes and colorful oleander bushes to historic Savannah for more holiday shopping.
No. 6: Visit the Tybee Pier for a spectacular display of fireworks. Dec. 31 at midnight is the time for the New Year’s Eve fireworks on Tybee Island.
No. 7: Stop by one of the many wonderful restaurants on Tybee Island. The Rock House Original Bar & Grill, the Breakfast Club, the Lighthouse Pizza, Seaside Sweets, the Sugar Shack all offer something different depending on your mood.
As the holiday season winds down, Tybee Island hosts its Polar Bear Plunge on New Year’s Day. The annual swim raises money for nursing scholarships for nurse candidates at Armstrong Atlantic University.
While visiting Tybee during the holidays, stop by the Tybee YMCA to learn about photo opportunities with Santa following the Tybee Holiday parade.
