There is an upcoming UFC fight that all fans are excited about– Nate Marquardt vs. Yushin Okami. In a recent UFC interview, Nate Marquardt related that “Okami is standing in his way” to get the belt. “He’s physically strong, he’s tall, (and) he’s lean.” Okami is quite a formidable opponent at 6’2” and 185 lbs. The 31-year-old Wyoming native who stands at 6’0” tall and 185 lbs believes that he will take his opponent down by submissions or takedown. This is his strategy and he is prepared to win the fight. Marquardt quit college after two years to go train in Japan in mixed martial arts. His whole dream stands in beating Okami.
Marquardt is 39-9-2 and is known to be a well rounded fighter. Okami’s strength is in his dexterity and his stone cold ground and pound strength. His basic move is his grappling defense. He has proved to be 88% successful in avoiding a takedown. In March 2010, he took down Lucio Linhares. The fight was stopped by the doctor since Lucio could not go on. The 29-year-old Kanagawa, Japan native stands at 26-5-0 and according to Sherdog, he is ranked as the 7th middleweight in the world.
“When I walk into the Octagon, I’m going to leave everything I have in the Octagon.” As to Marquardt, he expressed that he is “a complete technical fighter and has no weakness.” Okami is looking at the fight as his last chance for a shot at the middleweight title. “My ultimate goal is to become the first Japanese UFC champion.”
Will he use his signature move the Marquardt choke? UFC fans will find out this November 13th as he battles him in UFC 122 in Oberhausen, Germany to determine the number one UFC contender of all time.
