No one heard anything come into town that night so when the sun rose on another hot summer day, the townspeople awoke to an alarming sight. It wasn’t something they saw at first, rather heard and felt. The air seemed heavier than the hot humid morning rolling in would usually feel and there was a strange metallic taste in the air. Some folks said they heard and felt a bizarre vibration that seemed to emanate all around them. In fact, that was what everyone noticed first. In retrospect, it took awhile before they made the “discovery”. But when they did, life in the small town of Haslet would never be the same.
It was Johnny who found the object. At the age of twelve, it was Johnny’s responsibility to get up and feed the cows in the morning. When he walked out to the pasture to let the cattle in for their morning feed, they were nowhere to be found. In the field where there should have been cattle waiting patiently for their breakfast was a large cylindrical object. The object hovered about 150 feet above the ground. Protruding out of it was a large, seemingly solid shaft extending to the ground. The temperature around it was eerily cold, had to be at least 40 degrees cooler than the scorching summer sun that had been relentlessly heating up the town.
Being twelve and afraid of nothing, Johnny walked up to the object and reached out his hand to touch it. What he discovered made him turn and run for the house screaming for his father. Hearing the yelling outside, Johnny’s dad came out of the house in a hurry. But, Johnny couldn’t talk, just point. When his dad followed the direction of Johnny’s hand, he grabbed his son and ran for the house.
Sheriff Taylor was used to all kinds of calls at all hours of the day but when the call from Johnny’s father came in; he thought that the man must have lost his mind. Looking back now, he wishes that would have been the case.
When he arrived at their home, he tried to radio the office and found that his radio would produce nothing but static. Stepping out of the car, he dropped the radio and looked in the field in horror and astonishment. The vibrating had turned into more of a humming sound and a clicking noise started coming from the part that seemed to protrude into the ground. A clicking sound that seemed to be some sort of communication, much like Morse code.
By now, people from town started coming around, drawn by the humming and some unexplainable sense of being called to the location. As the number of people grew, the humming intensified. One person went up to it to touch the part that appeared to go into the ground. While appearing to be a solid object, he was shocked when his hand disappeared through it. When he pulled his hand back, he found his skin to appear to be frostbitten.
The clicking continued, faster now but definitely some sort of communication. Not random clicking but rhythmic and intensifying. Suddenly, a bright light filled the sky and the part of the object that had been on the ground appeared to slowly roll up into the cylindrical object. And then just like that, it was gone, leaving the townspeople to wonder if they had just been visited by something from another world.
