In tonight’s episode of CBS’s Undercover Boss, Subway Chief Development Officer, Don Fertman, trades in his office for a freezer. As usual, Undercover Boss sends Fertman to 4 locations: 2 stores in Orlando , 1 in Auburn and 1 in Buffalo .
In Orlando , Fertman meets Jessi, a chatty 19-year old sandwich artist, who pretty much kicked his sandwich-making ass! Nice guy, but Fertman was slow with the meat, veggies and condiments. With a long line waiting and sweat dripping down his forehead, the poor guy barely kept up as Jessi timed his progress.
His bad sandwich art continued as he went to Auburn , Alabama . There he met Sherri, a lovely lady and store manager. As he scooped tuna as if it was ice-cream – very slowly and cumbersomely – Fertman prolonged the sandwich-making by chatting up the customers – not good with another long line waiting.
Then he was at a store in Orlando again, where he met store manager Efrain. An adopted child, Efrain was driven, accomplished and hard-working. Also, he was hard on Fertman. Again, Fertman barely kept his head above the water.
After a big delivery order, Fertman was finally able to take a break at his last location in Buffalo , as he visited with a young pastor. Oddly, this subway store opened in a church. According to the pastor, in order to decrease crime and poverty, the Subway was opened in a church to create more jobs – what a great idea!
At the end of the show, Fertman revealed his disguise and gave each person something nice to take home with: Jessi got her college tuition and a paid-for vacation with her dad; Sherri got a chance to attend a national Subway convention, with a nice shopping spree; Efrain received a 5000-dollar donation for foster care and 1000 dollars to do something nice with his adopted mom; and the pastor earned a chance to develop more stores in more churches.
Don’t we all love happy endings?
As always, Undercover Boss proved that executives aren’t exactly the best at hands-on jobs. In tonight’s episode, the Chief Development Officer shouldn’t make sandwiches. But hard work does get recognized. And if you are lucky, it is recognized with a nice, relaxing vacation!
