This unique idea is a way to package Halloween candy for giving to trick or treaters on the cheap. It’s also a unique way to recycle food cans and is a DIY Halloween craft project the whole family can enjoy making.
Save the Food Cans for Recycling
Several food cans will be needed for this Halloween craft project, so start saving those foods cans (have family and friends save theirs for you too). Open the food cans with an electric can opener that cuts a safe edge so there will be no sharp edges on the cans. After emptying the contents, wash and dry the cans thoroughly.
Craft Items Needed for Halloween Candy Holders
A few craft items will be needed to decorate the food cans with – scrapbook paper, tissue paper, double-sided tape or glue, ribbon and scissors. Other embellishments can be added to the Halloween candy holders if desired, but the cheap way to decorate is with scrapbook paper bought in bulk.
Cut and Decorate the Halloween Candy Holders
Measure and cut a sheet of scrapbook paper to fit the height and diameter of the food cans. Add ½ inch to the diameter to allow for overlap around the can’s middle and add ½ inch to the height to allow the scrapbook paper to fold down inside the top and cover the open edge of the can. Strips of scrapbook paper can be used to create a multi-colored can, tape or glue each piece on separately.
Tape or glue the scrapbook paper onto the outside of the food can flush with the bottom of the can, then fold down the remaining ½ inch of scrapbook paper inside the top of the can and secure with tape or glue.
Cut contrasting strips of scrapbook paper in one inch strips and tape or glue them around the center of the can. Use scrapbook scissors (if desired) to give these strips of paper scalloped edges and/or have kids draw and color Halloween designs on the paper strips.
Add the Halloween Candy
Fold a sheet of tissue paper in half or thirds, depending on the height of the food cans, place the Halloween candy in the center of the tissue paper. Pull up the edges of the tissue paper to form a small bundle and tie the top with a short length of ribbon. Place the Halloween candy bundles inside the decorated food cans with the ribbon and tops of tissue paper showing above the cans.
These unique, cheap Halloween candy holders are fun to make and give to trick or treaters or to give out as Halloween party favors.
