Unpacking can be a real hassle, even without children. To make things easier, here are ways to organize and keep each room as neat and easy as possible. And without freaking your kids out to much.
Start with the bigger items
Right away after you get the keys, you will want to get the beds in. I am assuming that you are out of the old place, so you will want your cozy bed and your child’s beds so that something is normal for them. Also, get things like shelves, and couches in, so you have places to set things down right away. Not just stack boxes everywhere. This is something that will need to be done while someone is watching your children, or they are in school. They could get hurt if they get in the way.
Kitchen and bathroom
Next, since the beds are moved in, you are not going to sleep back at the old house or anything. You will need to get the kitchen unpacked right away. Before anything else is done, this is the most important. Next comes the bathroom, you will need to shower in the morning before anything, so things like the shampoo and children’s bibs. Things that you would not want to dig through boxes at two am looking for.
The children’s room
Before the end of the day, you will want to get the kids room unpacked and set up. This will keep them from freaking out so much at night when they wake up. Get their clothes and toys totally put away, and if you can get too it put some pictures on the wall. It will make it feel like home again. I would still let them sleep with the light on if they want to for the next few nights, moving can be scary.
Assuming you are going to be staying up late to get your home back too normal, during the dead of the night getting boxes sorted and stored is the best thing to do at this point. Begin with one box, and sort what needs to get put into storage, what needs to go into the closet ad what needs to be left out. If you are smart, you will have already sorted and boxed appropriately. Then you can just put the boxes where they need to go.
Living room/Dining room
Now that you have sorted out everything, you can now unpack the boxes you want left out. And now you can organize your living room the way you want it. Things like pictures, figurines and such. This should be the easiest part seeing as you got all the shelving down earlier.
When we moved for the hundredth time, we discovered that we wanted to get all the other rooms unpacked as soon as possible for the kid’s sake. But our room it didn’t matter too much. Since the kid’s did not go in there, and neither would our guests we did our room at a pace we felt comfortable with.
I believe I have covered the rooms all houses/apartments have, now you can sit back and not get as flustered. You and your children can now enjoy your new home and move on with more important things.
