One of the greatest benefits of unschooling is that learning is designed around the child, tailored specifically to the unique interests of the individual. It is not an assembly line curriculum meant for mass marketing for large scale learning seen in the public classrooms. Unschooling rather offers a much more individualized opportunity for an enriching learning experience. Unschooling by design means to truly discover the interests of your child and tailor a learning experience accordingly.
Each child is a special and unique individual that comes with their own strengths, weaknesses, interests and time clock. Each child designed to walk a particular path, adults are not always aware of. Many adults try to mold the child to fit their own ideals and expectations, how they view their child should be. They try to motivate the child to walk a path of the adults ideal, not the child’s intended path. Unschooling is a celebration of a child’s unique design that allows the child to be true to themselves, focusing on the child’s strengths through their passions and interests.
No two adults in this world are alike, even though their may be similarities, they can not be exactly alike. The same goes for children as well, they do not come with a one size fits all instruction booklet. With this in mind, a curriculum that is designed for the mass crowds, perhaps means an individual is greatly missing out on learning experiences that would have otherwise better suited them for their particular needs. While they may be getting small pieces of information that would be valuable to them, there are large chunks that would be deemed useless facts, soon to be forgotten a little later down the road.
This does not mean public school is useless, it certainly has its place in society and certainly offers learning experiences to children who may not otherwise be able to do so. There defiantly needs to be working done to improve the public school systems and is a worthwhile effort to try to do so. However those who are fortunate enough to be able to homeschool or unschool their children are at an advantage to seize the opportunity to offer an individualized plan for their children. When a child is interested, true learning is taking place. They are also able to learn things at their own unique stage of development of when they are ready and capable of learning something such as reading. They are not forced into learning anything before they are developmentally ready to learn it. Unschooling offers the freedom to learn at their own pace, with no time frame stipulating when they need to learn it.
Being able to tailor learning experiences to fit my children has been a huge blessing within our lives. Unschooling is a unique celebration of life each and every day, each day bringing a whole new set of opportunities for learning and growing. We are free to take advantage of each opportunity that comes up daily that we want to seize and act upon. The learning that takes place is vast and open where the classroom is not our guide and textbook but the world is. What a large expansive, limitless, endless textbook the world is!
