In an urban survival situation, you need to be able to move to a new place if you can’t find food or supplies etc. First, if you have a car, make sure it is in a safe place such as a garage or storage container. It is a good idea to stock up on maintenance supplies such as oil, gas,air pumps etc. If you feel the need to, you can armor your vehicle by putting steel plates in the doors and getting bullet proof windows. This will decrease your MPG, and it won’t fully protect the vehicle.
If you are in your head quarters and you see that you are running out of supplies, you should move to a different location because supplies most likely will not come anytime soon. A good place to be is the North-West. The reason for this is because the wind blows east on a national scale so if there is any nuclear weapon that has been used, the radiation will move east, and will not stay in the west for long. Survival in a rural area is extremely easier IF you have knowledge with wilderness.
It would be a good idea to make a plan to meet up at a certain location with friends or family. No one knows if radios could still be used. Losing connection with a contact in the middle of a plan is disastrous. The North-West offers more opportunities for permanent occupation. A good example is wildlife. In the North-West, there are many rivers leading to the pacific ocean, which means salmon will be flourishing there. Also, big game like dear, elk, and other big game animals found in the Southern part of Canada.
The way you get there will be difficult. It might be wise to wait until the rioting has seized to a minimum until you make your voyage. The less people there are means the less rioting, and you want your trip to be as smooth as possible. Make your trip with multiple vehicles if you have more than 5 people. 3 people to a car is good and will allow you to carry much more supplies. Once you are in a rural area you will be able to find other means of transportation such as horses or carts. There are many stables near rivers and oasises.
You will find other important resources on ranches. Cows will be plentiful and horses might be there. Horses, in general, are only useful to those who know how to prepare a horse for riding, and those who actually know how to ride them. Just like horses, cows can only be eaten if some one in the group knows how to butcher, and prepare a cow for eating. When gas is not available anymore, you need alternative ways for transportation.
If you have a permanent camp or settlement set up, and you need transportation just to get some where and not bring supplies, then a dirt bike or ATV would be an excellent choice due to its awesome MPG(60-100) and its maneuverability. ATVs will be able to pull trailers, and carry a mobile camp. Once you are in the North-West, you should learn how to live off the land. Catching fish, hunting game, and military training will all be needed for a successful settlement.
Growing crops will be a very good idea as well. When things have settled down, it is more than likely that communities will emerge all over. Trade will likely come up and super power city states will control land. In my opinion, I believe that after the first few decades of the catastrophe, we will return to a modern version of the feudal age, and powerful war lords will control new city states and land will be divided by clans etc.
