Yesterday, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange was charged with rape in Sweden. Although it was unclear where Assange was at the time, an arrest warrant was issued and, if caught, Assange would have been up on rape and molestation charges. Only a few hours later however, the arrest warrant was canceled and rape charges against Julian Assange were dropped as Swedish authorities said there was no evidence to show Assange had been involved in a rape. Molestation charges are still being investigated, but it’s likely those charges will be dropped soon too. But, in a world where the Pentagon and the US government is after Julian Assange for publishing secret US military documents on his website Wikileaks, you might be thinking the US government could have something to do with the fake rape charges. Surprisingly, you wouldn’t be the only one.
In forums and in comment sections on websites all over the internet, people are voicing their suspicions and many are saying they suspect US government, CIA or Pentagon involvement. After all, to say the Pentagon warned Julian Assange not to publish the rest of the Pentagon documents he has in his possession and to take down the ones already published on Wikileaks and then, only a week later Assange is accused of rape, well that’s just a bit too coincidental for many people to believe.
As far as the accusations of rape and molestation go, they were apparently filed by two women who appeared at a Swedish police station last week and accused Assange. Both instances of rape and molestation supposedly happened when Assange was in Sweden last week checking on Swedish servers hosting some of Wikileaks information.
As most of us know though, it’s unfortunately extremely easy to pay someone to file a false charge of rape, in fact it happens all over the world, Assange himself posted on Twitter hours after the arrest warrant was issued that Wikileaks had been warned “dirty tricks” were likely. He also tweeted the allegations appearing now are “deeply disturbing”.
If the US government, CIA or Pentagon were involved however, it wouldn’t be anything they haven’t done before. For decades, the US has been involved with shady dealings all over the world, undermining the reputation of people who don’t support them and often with CIA involvement and with seemingly little regard for human life or human dignity. So, something like this character assassination, which to most of us would be classified as immoral, illegal and slimey, is something these three American entities are perfectly capable of and willing to do, In fact, it’s nothing more than a normal day at the office.
If the US government or one of its entities was involved in what look like fake rape and molestation charges against Julian Assange however, then the attempt itself was extremely clumsy and probably not one that should be repeated. After all, when only a couple of hours after the charges have been filed and thousands of people across the internet are already accusing the CIA, Pentagon or the US government, it’s highly unlikely the charges are going to have the desired effect. If anything, they’re likely to have the opposite one.
