Utah has a training requirement for all license applicants who have never had a license. The Utah Department of Public Health has approved several brick-and-mortar and a handful of online Utah driving schools. The Utah Driver License Division administers the licensing and testing of Utah drivers. Those who wish to apply for the first time need to learn how to look for and select a driving school in Utah. After completion of the required training, a Utah license applicant can take a knowledge and road test to get a Utah driver’s license.
Applicants for a Utah driver’s license should first determine the types of programs approved by the Utah Department of Public Health and accepted by the Driver License Division for Utah driver training. There are three main kinds of approved Utah driving schools. The first type is the standard Utah driver’s education course in Utah high schools. The second kind of driving school in Utah is a traditional brick-and-mortar school. Finally, Utah is gradually accepting online education as a viable means of providing Utah residents with driver training. As of 2010, a couple of online driver training courses have been approved.
High school students who are going to apply for their first license should generally just take the normal route and take the standard Utah driver’s ed class in high school. This is typically how residents complete their driving school for a Utah driver’s license. If you cannot attend this course because you do not have time or have already graduated, then you can look for private driver training schools or the newer online courses.
If you are opting for a private offline school, then the Department of Public Safety’s website has a list of driving schools. Visit the “Driver Education Schools in Utah” page at Publicsafety.utah.gov/dld/documents/DriverEducationSchoolsinUtah.pdf. As of October 2010, the list includes 24 driving schools with the name, phone number and city. Call the numbers for additional information on times, cost and other details.
Lately, the Utah Driver License Division has approved two online schools: a-1drivingschool.com and the Utah Electronic High School at ehs.uen.org. Visit those websites for more details on their Utah driver education and training program.
Remember that you only need to take a driving program in Utah if you have never held a license either in Utah or any other state. If you have previously held a driver’s license in another state or in Utah, then provide evidence of that when you go to test for a Utah license at the Utah Driver License Division. However, if you have never been a licensed driver anywhere, then select a Utah driving school appropriate for you, complete your Utah driver training and take proof when you go to apply for a Utah driver’s license.
