After last week’s make out session in Mason’s car, Katherine is getting busy. Unfortunately for my wife and daughter they’ll have to wait next week for a new episode of “Vampire Diaries” at 8 p.m. ET on the CW network. This week was a repeat of the dynamite season premiere “The Return” in which we learn not one but two characters are being played by Nina Dobrev in the modern day Elena and the 150-year-old vampire Katherine.
Katherine is back with a vengeance as she picks up where the first season left off. Yes, she’s mad and wants some payback. She impersonates Elena on several fronts including trying to kill Elena’s father. Then Stefan asks Elena why she kissed him the pieces begin to fit together-Mystic Falls has discovered that Katherine has returned.
Meanwhile Caroline, still human, was in a bad car wreck and both Stefan and Damon wonder if their own blood will be enough to heal her. Now that Elena’s father is in the hospital with a stab wound the main characters can take of two things at once.
The Salvatore brothers consider what to do about Elena’s father now that he may know something. Stefan threatens him that if he doesn’t leave town he’ll be turned into a vampire whether John likes it or not.
But the buzz is this episode is all about Katherine. What was only seen in flashbacks before will be a new reality for Mystic Falls now. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned and Katherine has over 150 years’ worth of scorn saved up for Damon. She gives him a choice to either kiss her or kill her. Like any good male vampire he goes for the one that has the most pleasure.
Poor Damon. Both Katherine and Elena both tell him in the same night that they love his brother Stefan instead of him. What’s a studly vampire got to do to get some affection around here? Talk about a sibling rivalry of epic proportions. This aspect of the episode drove my daughter nuts. She finds both of the Salvatore brothers attractive so why can’t he find the woman of his dreams?
The werewolves in town are also suffering. Tyler is upset at his father’s recent death and starts acting wildly. His uncle Mason, the Mayor’s brother who just died, steps in to save him and explains that his behavior is a curse. Cue foreshadowing of the rest of the season.
My wife and daughter’s favorite part of the episode revolve around how the brothers deal with Katherine back in their lives. Damon gets drunk, even though he’s a vampire, and ends up killing Elena’s brother but her survives thanks to a protective ring given to him by his father before he left town.
The battle for Mystic Falls has begun. Will it be a bloodbath for vampires or a howling good time for werewolves?
