I have a great shame. In my life, I have made a lot of mistakes. For one thing, I drove a car into a church. I planned on getting a job, that I am sure will never happen. I am an adult male who has a crush on the Little Mermaid. But my greatest embarrassment of late is my new television addiction. I am hopelessly addicted to Vampire Diaries. It’s embarrassing to even type, but it’s true.
Now let me be clear: I can’t stand Twilight. And I am tired of the “vampire craze” that is sweeping the entertainment world currently. And I know it was originally a book written for little teenage girls when I was in school years ago. And yet, in spite of all of this, I must confess. This show rocks!
There are several reasons I watch the show. It has an awesome cast that fills my favorite archetypes. Stefan is the tortured, loving hero. He knows he has a darkness that can easily consume him. But he has found love, and will push against the gates of hell itself to save Elena. His older brother Damon relishes in his darkness though. He walks a fine line between good and evil. However, he readily crosses the line frequently. In a recent episode, he even killed the main character’s brother (have no fear: a magic ring brought him back. I am embarrassed to even type that). That brings us to the lovely Elena. She is pretty! She is also caring and decent. She wants a normal life, but fell in love with the one person who can’t give it to her.
There is also the action of the show. Unlike that other big vampire story, Vampire Diaries is filled with death and violence. Not an episode goes by without the heroes fighting some new vampire threat. They also constantly fight amongst themselves in an attempt to gain the upper hand for Elena. The regular characters are dragged into a world they can’t control, much less understand, but fight anyway. Meanwhile in Twilight, I have seen Bella sit and whine for three movies. For those of you who claim that the movies are above the tv show because of the furry Jacob, VD just got its own wolf boy, In the dearly departed mayor’s brother.
How this show will turn out, I have no clue. My lovely wife has read all of the books but the last one. Unlike the Twilight series, she feels the show is much better. But it also doesn’t stick to the books as much as Twilight. I loved vampires way before the teens discovered them, but because of this show, I may be willing to put up with the teen vampire craze. Until someone shoves a stake through Edward, make mine Vampire Dairies.
