The art world is aghast at the news that a Vincent van Gogh painting worth $50 million dollars (over 39 million euros) has been stolen from the Khalil Museum in Cairo, Egypt. This museum is located in the Dokki section of Cairo, on the Nile. Could the painting have immediately been removed from the area via a boat on the river?
The painting, “The Poppy Flower” (sometimes also called “Vase and Flowers”) is missing from the museum. An intense hunt is on to find the valuable artwork. This painting has been stolen previously also. In that theft the painting was eventually found.
Will the Painting be Found?
Will the painting be recovered again, or is this precious art from Vincent van Gogh going to disappear forever? Van Gogh’s works are revered worldwide. The loss of even one painting is a tragedy.
Daytime Robbery of Van Gogh Painting
The method by which the thieves managed to steal the Van Gogh painting from the museum has not yet been fully identified. It is known that the painting was sliced from the frame holding it.
The theft occurred during the daytime. There is no word yet as to whether there are any witnesses to this crime. That seems odd. Didn’t the museum have video security monitoring the room the Van Gogh painting was in?
This museum also has artworks by Gauguin, Rodin, Monet, and Toulouse-Lautrec. It would seem it should have extremely high levels of security with that level of art on the premises. This museum is said to contain art works valued at about a total of seven billion dollars, notes AFP.
The Egyptian government has notified all routes of exit from the country, such as airports and sea ports that the painting has been stolen and to keep watch for anyone trying to remove it from the country.
The Life and Career of Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh was born in Holland in 1853. He died in 1890. He created about 900 paintings during a decade of his life when he worked as an artist. He gained fame only after he died. During his lifetime van Gogh only sold one of his paintings.
He would be shocked and delighted to learn that now he is famous worldwide and his paintings are worth many millions of dollars. Van Gogh used color powerfully in his artwork. Many of his paintings create a strong emotional response in the viewer due to the intensity of the colors used.
Some of his peaceful paintings like “Landscape with Dunes,” “Vase with Gladioli” and “Flowering Garden” bring serenity to the viewer. However, many other of his paintings, like “Starry Night” and “Landscape at Auvers in the Rain” give a more skewered view of reality and use colors that seem almost disturbing in their bold placement and depth.

Who knows what happened. It will be fascinating to see how investigators try to figure out who now has the van Gogh painting.
