For many, October brings visions of fall: changing leaves, cooler temperatures, and pumpkin decorations galore. But for the vegetarian and vegan blog community, October means the Vegan Month of Food (also known as Vegan MoFo), a whole month of frenetic food and recipe blogging focused entirely on vegan cuisine.
Vegan MoFo first launched in 2007, originally occurring during November. In 2008 it moved to October, coinciding with Vegetarian Awareness Month and kicking off on World Vegetarian Day on October 1st. Like the popular National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), which connects aspiring authors from all over the world as they attempt to write novels during the month of November, Vegan MoFo links the vegan blog community in unprecedented ways.
Bloggers participating in Vegan MoFo attempt to post at least 20 blog entries during the month, roughly one for each weekday. These posts can include recipes, photos, or anything to do with vegan food. Popular and favorite posts are rounded up on the Vegan MoFo blog, and mouth-watering food pictures appear in the Vegan MoFo Flickr photo stream throughout the month.
People participate in Vegan MoFo for a variety of reasons. One is simply that they love food! Vegans who are passionate about food, cooking, and eating can keep on posting what they already enjoy, with the added bonus of extra blog exposure through the networking that Vegan MoFo offers. This networking is another great aspect of Vegan MoFo. When bloggers sign up to participate, a link to their blog is posted on a list with other MoFo bloggers on vegan cookbook author Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s Post Punk Kitchen blog. Add to that the chance to wind up featured in one of the weekly Vegan MoFo blog posts, and the opportunity to expand blog readership is hard to pass up.
Why a whole month dedicated to vegan food? October is a big month for vegetarian and vegan awareness. The North American Vegetarian Society founded World Vegetarian Day in 1977 and it has been observed on October 1st ever since. In 2005, In Defense of Animals launched World Go Vegan Week, dedicating the last week in October to vegan advocacy and animal rights outreach. These events promote healthy, plant-based diets as tools for personal health, environmental conservation, and improving the wellbeing of farmed animals. Vegan MoFo takes this a step further by showing how delicious a vegetarian or vegan diet can be.
Non-vegans can enjoy Vegan MoFo just as much as vegans! The veg-curious can browse photos, posts, and recipes for inspiration and information. Learning about alternatives to meat and dairy may be the first step for many in switching to a vegetarian or vegan diet. The abundance of blog posts available during October makes it that much easier to find new meals to try and facts to share with friends and family.
So this October, between planning Halloween costumes and scarfing candy corn, take a little time to peruse the blogs of talented vegans across the web. Beautiful food photos and new recipes for delicious, meat-free, dairy-free, egg-free meals await!
