Do you like to eat the same boring food everyday? You probably don’t, and neither does your fish. Fish like to eat a variety of different foods, too. Each different food you give your fish has different nutrients specific to that food. These nutrients may not be found in another food your fish eats. Human beings don’t just eat one food and if they did they would not be very healthy. The same rule applies to your fish’s diet as well. One single food can not provide all the nutrients your fish needs to stay healthy. Instead of just giving your fish the same pellet or flake food every day, give them a treat of something different along with it. If your fish seem to be unhealthy and suffer from diseases such as fin and tail rot constantly they may need extra vitamins they are not getting from their diet. You can find liquid vitamins especially formulated for fish that you can soak fish food pellets in and you you can also add the liquid vitamins to the aquarium water along with adding vegetables to their diet.
Fish that are herbivores or omnivores will love dried sea weed sheets that can be found in brown, red, purple, and green varieties. Some of the dried sea weed products come with a veggie clip. A veggie clip will keep a piece of dried seaweed or green leaf lettuce, attached to the wall of the aquarium. You can also find sea weed in frozen and gel forms to supply the additional nutrition your fish needs for a healthy immune system. Peas are a very important staple in a goldfish’s diet because they are rich in fiber and aide digestion. To learn more about the dietary needs of goldfish read The Importance of Peas and Other Sources of Fiber in a Goldfish’s Diet. Fresh green leaf lettuce is also a great treat for fish graze on at their leisure, but make sure to remove the leftover pieces when they start to decay because it can harm water quality. All of these forms of vegetables will provide fiber, protein and vitamins that will help your fish live up to their potential. So if you have fish that need this vegetable matter in their diets, make sure to provide it for a healthy aquarium.
