I started playing online shooters on my Playstation 3 a few years ago. Team Fortress 2, I think it was. I was having a fun time until I noticed something strange: People were setting up turrets inside the system. I mean, the people could shoot me every time I walked past a door, but they somehow hacked the game and could just pick people off without retribution.
That was the last time I tried to play that game.
After playing a couple more shooters online, I started to see how a community was developing: a community of hackers and such that were out to make my online gaming experience a truly horrendous one.
Here are a few of the worst gamer habits out there, and why you should care.
There you go again. You just respawned and stuck your head out to look around and “blam” you just got poked by a headshot. Well, let me try that again, they just got lucky.
Blam.” Headshot. And again, until you slam the controller down in defeat.
What, did this person look up “Where to stand in the Highrise map level of Modern Warfare 2 so you can pick off the other team” on youtube? How is this fun? Can’t you just play the game and let me do the same? No? Is it fun for you to circumnavigate the system and ruin our fun? Apparently it is.
So you’ve been trying to improve your skills in deathmatch? Did you ever notice that sometimes you walk around stealthily and you’re about to skillfully execute the other team when “Skadooj!” you get annihilated with one shot of an RPG, grenade launcher, or other such weapon?
n00b tubers. When you want to do something that takes absolutely no skill and just tick off the other team, pull out your grenade launcher and one shot kill them.
Why should you care? This kind of weapon is fun to use, because of its one shot kill, but come on. There are some people that make their killing on these games with this. Not fun for the player who maybe hasn’t unlocked this weapon. There’s no real way around this thing, it just takes the skill of the attack out of it all.
These are the worst of the worst. These are the people that find little glitches in the game and exploit them. Sure, developers usually get these pretty quick, but some of the most popular glitches were a pain in the butt. The one i mentioned before in Team Fortress 2 happened on several levels. I mean, people were floating around behind the walls picking me off. I remember in Uncharted 2 some people doing the same thing.
Why did I just die? Well, it was that loser who knew how to enter the wall and snipe you from a distance without any chance of them getting hurt. Oh that was fun, was it? Can’t I just play a game and try to get good at it the right way?
So you entered into free for all match and you told the guy that you’d trade head shot kills with them so you can earn extra point and weapons and prestige for the 15 time. The you just left before he could get the chance to do the same.
What’s the deal with this? Do people look at your record and be like “Wow I want to be like this person?” No. They know the only reason you got this far in the game was because you cheated.
That’s right, you cheated.
Is it fun?
If you’ve read anything here and understood half of it, you’ll agree that the fun gets sucked right out of games when you encounter matches like these. It’s not good for the gamers, the community of gamers that is growing out there, and for the developers of games. So next time you want to add the grenade launcher to your weapon and pwn n00bs from your secret spot inside the bunker, think again, please.
