On Saturday, October 30, 2010, residents of Downtown Dallas were awakened by the sound of helicopters hovering overhead. At 8:15 am, several buildings belonging to the First Baptist Church were demolished via implosion. It was a sight to see!
Construction crews have been preparing the buildings for weeks, as witnessed by those living and working around Federal, Ervay, and North St. Paul streets. The demolition is part of a $115 million renovation that First Baptist has planned (wfaa.com). One building that was not touched was the 120-year old sanctuary, around which the new church campus will be built (wfaa.com).
Residents in Downtown were treated to a rare, firsthand experience on the day of the implosion. Dust filled the air after the buildings went down, but it cleared within 30 minutes. Now, the real work begins for the cleanup crews. Check out the before and after images that were taken above. Also, here is a video of the implosion, with sound, as it took place early in the morning.
