Kris Allen is involved in a scandal? Hardly. As clean-cut as the Arkansas Christian appears to be, it is difficult to even think of him being in one at all. But American Idol Season 8 winner Kris Allen sat down with Entertainment Weekly‘s Michael Slezak to talk about his new single, “Alright With Me,” and the strange failure of “The Truth,” the second single from Allen’s debut album. During the conversation, Slezak suggested that a Kris Allen scandal might help. Given that a lot of television and movie business is generated due to what seems to be fortuitous scandals, what if Kris Allen got involved in one? What would a Kris Allen scandal even look like?
After telling Slezak that he had been a bit worried about whether or not there would even be a third single from his eponymous debut album, Kris Allen talked about the creative process of “Alright With Me” and said that recording it was one the two best moments he had while recording the debut album. It was clear that the song’s catchy break resonated with the American Idol alumnus. But when Allen said he didn’t see the song not catching on, Slezak asked, “So no plans for like a PR scandal to try and, you know… a big blow-up.”
Allen played along. “Mmmmm… maybe,” he said. He added, “I don’t know what it would be though.”
Slezak seemed to hit upon something. He pressed. “What would be your scandal? If you were going to have a major, like, TMZ-style scandal, what would it be?”
Kris Allen laughed. Slezak suggested they brainstorm. Within seconds, Slezak had Kris Allen in a bar brawl, a la the Kardashians. Kris Allen was worried about perhaps losing fans, but Michael Slezak suggested that getting into a bar brawl with someone like the Kardashians would work. Laughing and admitting he didn’t watch “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” Slezak suggested the scenario of Allen getting into a brawl with Kourtney Kardashian’s baby daddy. Proving his point, Kris Allen asked, “Lamar Odom?”
Slezak laughed, correcting him, “That’s Khloe’s.” He noted that he didn’t believe Kris Allen would fare well in a bar fight with Lamar Odom, to which the American Idol alum admitted, “I think he would stomp me in the ground. He’s like seven feet tall.”
Perhaps the orchestrated PR scandal should wait until his singles and album-sales plummet, which might not happen for quite some time — if ever. Until then, Kris Allen will have to make it on his songwriting and performing skills, which are impressive in and of themselves. His first album is steadily approaching the gold certification (500,000 copies sold) plateau.
