Located on the banks of The Great Miami River as far back as the 13th century there was a village we now call Sunwatch. The Sunwatch Indian Village has been a National Historic Landmark since 1990.
The archaeological park keeps it’s setting natural and as you arrive you will note the wild grasses and flowers that bloom are left to be enjoyed by all. The walkway leading up to the entrance is lined with plaques that give you a time line of what was going on when this part of the world was unknown.
Inside the main building you will find a theater that shows a film about the village and it’s discovery. A gift shop and a museum is located on the main floor. It has a large deck off the back of the building that overlooks the actual village site.
I recommend watching the movie first then go to the recreated village behind. It’s a nice short walk. Along the way to the village you will pass many signs that report what was happening in the known world. You will pass an actual garden growing the same foods they ate.
Before you enter the gates to the village you can see a picnic area large enough to accommodate groups.
The village was then and now is encircled by a woven wood fence. The museum offers an 18 point audio tour to visitors through out the village. You may wander at will inside and out the recreated buildings of the village. Enjoy it at your leisure.
Back inside the main building a tour through the museum is a must. There are many displays of the artifacts found on site. Several recreated scenes of village life and a section showing how the site was excavated.
Before leaving, visit the gift shop. Many beautiful traditional crafts are available for sale.
