If you’re traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina and like accommodations with wide open spaces, consider checking into the Blake Hotel in Charlotte. The rooms are decorated in earth tone colors and feature Belgian linens and down duvets. The windows, dressed in mahogany drapes, provide a view of downtown Charlotte, and if you’re on the Executive Level, the 14th floor, you’ll have a balcony view.
While the rooms are nicely sized and comfortable, you’ll really notice the vastness in the lobby and meeting areas, such as the Symphony, Mecklenburg , Cardinal and Executive Ballrooms, which are perfect for conferences.
There’s artwork and decorative objects around every corner, high ceilings, patterned carpets, and plush furniture. You’ll pass much of this on your way back and forth to the parking garage, and if you have some time to spare, sit a while and enjoy the atmosphere.
If you want to keep up with your exercise routine, ’tis no problem–the fitness center is stocked with treadmills, bikes, and other equipment. The swimming pool is available from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so do a few laps if you get a chance.
Of course, it’s perfectly acceptable to skip such things in favor of a cup of coffee from the Coffee Kiosk and a newspaper, or you may even want to shoot a game of pool. When I stayed at the hotel, it was mid-week, and it didn’t appear crowded–or perhaps the vastness altered my perception.
The staff was polite and friendly and provided directions to the nearby Dilworth Neighborhood Grille. The Blake is located in downtown Charlotte about four blocks from the Charlotte Convention Center, seven blocks from Bank of America stadium, a mile from Discovery Place, several blocks from the NASCAR Hall of Fame, 8 miles from Charlotte Douglas International Airport and 14 miles from Paramount’s Carowinds.
Breakfast is available for an extra charge, although I didn’t have the chance to try it, nor the bar in the lobby. I recommend the Blake Hotel, and plan to visit again soon.
