Many years ago, on my very first trip to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, I spent a weekend at the lovely lakefront Harbor Shores hotel. At the time, the Harbor Shores was one of the few downtown lodging options available, but today it definitely has some shoreline competition. However, after a recent lobby renovation and the wonderful addition of a beloved Chicago-based pizza parlor, the Harbor Shores hotel still lives up to its Midwestern reputation.
Many rooms at Harbor Shores have cozy balconies with magnificent views of Geneva Lake. In fact, the lake is literally a stone’s throw from the hotel. Rooms at the Harbor Shores are the standard hotel size and are not super fancy, but they do include a handy kitchenette complete with a microwave, sink, mini fridge, coffee maker and even a toaster. And each unit also contains a comfy sofa sleeper, high speed internet, a DVD player and more. Other amenities at the hotel include: indoor and outdoor heated pools, sauna, fitness room, business center, banquet rooms and free parking. And the hotel is host to weddings, reunions, scrapbooking conventions, business meetings, etc.
Rates at the hotel are reasonable especially considering the location, location, location. In fact, the Harbor Shores is within walking distance to the beach, boardwalk, marina, boat rides, gourmet food shops, cafes, pubs, candy stores, ice cream parlors, museums, mini golf, toy stores, clothing boutiques and so much more. You can literally park your car at the hotel for the weekend and spend the rest of the time exploring the village on foot. And a quick and scenic stroll along the waters swiftly delivers you to the downtown district.
But perhaps my favorite Harbor Shores amenity would be the on-site Gino’s East Restaurant and Bar. As a lifelong Chicagoan, I consider myself to be a pizza connoisseur and Gino’s East does not disappoint. The traditionally decorated pizzeria welcomes guests with red checkerboard table cloths, hardwood floors and trim, pendant lighting, European wall decor and an abundance of lofty windows with delightful lake views. Not to mention the hearty and robust, lip-smacking stuffed meat and cheesy pies that has made Gino’s East an adored staple in the city of Chicago for decades.
Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and its quaint surrounding towns also offer an abundance of appealing activities like: wineries, farms, outlet shopping, water sports, horseback riding, apple picking, downhill and cross country skiing, antiquing, hiking, biking and so much more.
