The bustling Hill Country Region City of San Marcos is known for its’ scenic beauty, unusual creatures, outlet malls and the only earthquake formed cavern in the United States that is open to public viewing.
Part theme park, part marvel of Mother Nature, “Wonder World” is an eclectic mix of education and thrills. It is centered over the “Balcones Fault Line”, which hasn’t been active in close to 15 million years.
Established sometime around the Miocene Period, the “Balcones Fault Line” runs across Texas from the South West near Del Rio to the West Central region near Waco and is responsible for the formation of the cave.
It is also the reason that there are unique salamanders’ indigenous to San Marco and the Edwards Aquifer area.
“Wonder World” offers guided tours of the quake created cave as well as activities at its’ on-site wildlife petting park and quirky anti-gravity house.
Visitors that partake of the guided cave tour are escorted out of the cave via a ride aboard the 190 foot tall “Tejas Observation Tower” elevator. During the exit ride visitors will be afforded a unique view at the various cave strata and a birds-eye view of San Marco’s surrounding geography.
