In an area that is no stranger to terror attacks, many have been seriously injured and at least fifteen people have lost their lives. As of right now, there is no one claiming responsibility for the attack. There was another bomb found at the front gates that hadn’t gone off and that are was evacuated
In past bombings, Islamist militants claimed responsibility. Islamist militants are seeking sharia-law, or Islamic law to be in effect there and have said they will continue to target North Caucasus’ “economic targets”. The area is mostly Russian Orthodox Christian. Although no group has claimed responsibility, the owner of the car used in the bombing and the man responsible for carying out the attack have both been identified. Their names are Dobriyev and Archiyev respectively.
In Vladikavkaz, the capital of the Russian republic North Ossetia has had attacks before, one of the worst attacks there was in 1999. The same market was targeted and at that time there were over sixty people killed and numerous others injured. The attackers in that case were both captured and convicted. While there have been no attacks as deadly, there have been many incidents especially ones against women for not following sharia-law.
President Boris Yeltsin said in a public address: “I apologize to the families of the victims, I apologize, because I carry the responsibility for it all,”. He has vowed to fight against future violent crimes.
