All Americans have a legacy; a story about their ancestors journey to this land of opportunity. From the Native Americans who were always here; who owned this land long before what some called civilization came and tried to destroy their dreams. Yet somehow they have found a way to make something out of nothing and make first class entertainment enterprises that rival most.
Some of our ancestors were those that came to the new land with the hope of finding religious freedom. They were upset with the restrictions of the Church of England. From these ancestors sprang many religions sometimes standing side by side on the same street.
There are those whose ancestors were bought here to be bought and sold for the benefit of others. But through all of this, these ancestors look down and see their descendants in seats of power.
Some ancestors came over in boats that were held together with prayers to escape the unfairness of their home countries. They find themselves now sharing the American dream.
Other’s ancestors came to this country by walking through the desert in the hope of finding a better life for their families. They are in the process of fulfilling that dream.
There are so many others whose ancestors came, but most came for the same reason to make a better life for their families. Even those who came unwillingly have been able to benefit from this country we call America.
Even when these ancestors settled here their voices were sometimes not heard. They were assigned to internment camps even as their sons fought in America’s war. They faced such things being denied the right to vote. These ancestors fought for this right and endured mental and physical harm. These groups fought to have the right to have everyone’s voice heard.
Whether they came by boat, car, foot or airplane, they had a dream to have a better life. America is indeed a land of opportunity. We have an opportunity to have our voices heard so that we can allow our children to continue the dream of their ancestors. Let’s keep the legacies and hopes that made America strong-let’s keep our voices heard. Let’s go out and vote.
