A Black Friday Sacramento Walmart evacuation took place when customers started getting unruly. The Black Friday sales were to begin at 5 a.m. in stores that are open 24 hours, but customers waiting to take advantage of those deals didn’t quite keep their excitement in check, it seems.
According to Fox 40 News, a first sale was taking place at midnight on the morning of Black Friday, with a second sale taking place at 5 a.m.. That second sale required shoppers to get a bracelet, but just after the store opened their doors, things got a little crazy. It was reported that store security guards saw customers were getting pushy and unruly, leading to the Sacramento Sheriff’s office getting called.
When the Sheriffs deputies arrived on the scenes, they ordered everyone to leave their carts and evacuate the store. Once all of the customers were out of the store and much calmer, the store was reopened for the sale. It definitely seems like the right decision was made, especially if the security guards and deputies felt that customers were putting themselves at risk.
This isn’t the first time Walmart has had problems with crowd control during a Black Friday sale, and could have led to the quick response to evacuate the store and gets things under control. It probably also won’t be the last, as many Black Fridays have been notoriously linked to customers losing control and doing anything they can to take advantage of a deal.
Back in 2008, a Walmart employee was killed when the Green Acres Mall store opened up in Valley Stream, New York. Customers arriving for thesale became extremely unruly, surging as the doors to the store were shattered and a “mob” of people burst into the store to try to take advantage of the sales. Jdimytai Damour, who was working to try to control the crowd, was trampled in an incident that was later ruled to be preventable.
The Sacramento evacuation was definitely the right decision if any customers or employees were at risk, and it is good to hear that someone was willing to make the decision to kick out all of the customers in order to regain some semblance of order. Sure, there were probably some customers who weren’t pushing and shoving, but in a frenzied atmosphere like this, where mob mentality is seen to take over, something needed to be done as soon as possible.
This story just shows the dangers of Black Friday, and how sometimes people stop caring about other people when it comes to saving a few dollars on a purchase.
