Fender bender fees are happening across the nation. These fees are beginning to show up since many communities and many cities are finding themselves cash poor. They need to find creative ways to pay for their needed services such as their police force. One of these ways is fender bender fees.
What is a fender bender fee?
A fender bender fee is a fee that is incurred after a police officer helps out during minor routine services and possibly filing out a routine report or two. This often will happen after a minor traffic accident such as those that are labeled fender benders, thus the name.
These are the same types of services that police officers would normally do for free.
How much are these charges?
These charges will depend on the community and the city, which means they will vary. Yet, a current story on a Columbus, Ohio news station reported that one particular fender bender, with no physical harm to a person, cost an older lady $776 in what they city called a Crash Tax Bill. This bill was divided up into three charges: $462 for the response of 3 police cruises, $80 for the response of 3 officers and $234 in administrative fees.
She was billed this amount because she was found at fault and she was a nonresident of Columbus.
Most cities will only charge these fees to non-residents of the city in question. However, everyone seems to argue the point that the police and the cities in question seem to be charging for something that that they all ready being paid to do in the first place.
What should someone do if they can not pay these charges?
Call the city or the police station in question and see if they can negotiate a lower payment. If you are in a hardship condition, explain this and possibly they can even waiver the payment completely. But be aware that you may have to show proof of your financial hardship.
As times are getting harder throughout the country and more of our police stations are being strapped for money to continue operation, expect more and more fees. This may be their only way to survive and their only way to continue to serve and protect us.
