Your bedroom should be your sanctuary. It should be calm and relaxing. Many of us make the mistake of using our bedroom for activities that are far from relaxing. When nighttime comes, we have not created an environment that will relax us but stimulates us. When morning comes and we are not well-rested, part of the blame could be your sleeping space.
Here are some tips to change your bedroom into an atmosphere that promotes relaxation and better sleep.
Is the lighting in your bedroom too harsh? A bedside table is nice for reading at night before going to sleep. You can use lower wattage bulbs to help create a more subtle setting. Keeping the outdoor light out by using room darkening shades or curtains can also give the room a more peaceful feeling.
Try hanging curtains around your bed to separate it from other parts of your bedroom. Your bed should be as inviting as possible and having a work desk nearby will only distract from the feeling you want to create. If you cannot hang curtains, use a screen to separate the bed from other distractions.
Many people are sleeping on the wrong mattress. Many people are also sleeping on a mattress that is too old. Mattresses need to be replaced and if yours is not giving you the proper support, you probably are aware of this from the backaches, headaches and other physical issues you may have. Spending the money on a good mattress is worth a good nights sleep.
It is not always possible to block out noise, light or other distractions. Another reason to have heavier curtains on your bedroom windows is to help block outdoor noise. We cannot control noisy neighbors, barking dogs or sounds of traffic but draperies or curtains will cut down the noise.
Trying to relax and sleep in a room that is too stuffy will give you a headache. Keeping your room too warm is also not good for sleep. Find a comfortable temperature level by either cracking a window open, using a small fan or the air conditoner in order to create the perfect temperature.
Sounds to soothe.
Use calming music to help lull you to sleep. New age music or nature sounds can help to create a perfect sleep sanctuary. Using a fan is also another tip to help drown out noises that can interfere with sleep.
A dream pillow is small sachet that is filled with aromatic herbs. The fragrance of the herbs can help to relax you and promote good sleep.
