November 2010 has seen the introduction of the new ProPoints plan at Weight Watchers in the United Kingdom. How much different is it to the old Weight Watcher’s points plan? Does it actually work? I had the privilege to try this diet for the last few weeks and I am very pleased with the results.
I have been attending Weight Watchers meetings and doing the points plan for the past two and a half years. I have lost 70 pounds in my weight loss journey so far, and Weight Watchers has been instrumental in helping me achieve that goal. The support you get at the meetings and from the wonderful leaders is well worth the money and is invaluable in terms of mental stability. Dieting can be maddening but it doesn’t have to be and you don’t have to do it alone.
The new ProPoints plan was created when Weight Watchers developers decided to take a step back and asked themselves how they would do the points plan if they had just invented it with all of the knowledge of nutrition that we have now. It is now known that the body processes proteins, fats and carbohydrates in different ways. The ProPoints plan helps you choose the proper proportions of these foods in order to help you lose weight and to remain satisfied while also allowing enough freedom for those extra treats that make life worth living.
The points are easy to figure out using the information that you receive at your first meeting, unless you eat a lot of name brand processed foods, then you should obtain the calculator or the books on dining out and shopping. There is a wheel that helps you figure out points based on nutritional information found on packets but the calculator available from the shop at meetings is much simpler. If you write down your points used in the trackers provided each week, you can easily lose 1-2 pounds per week.
In addition, you have a certain number of points each week to use as you like. Instead of “saving” points for a special meal, points no longer roll-over, but you have your “weekly allowance” to use for those special occasions or that sneaky chocolate bar that always seems to be necessary. These are my weekend points that I find incredibly helpful when ordering a take away!
I like this new ProPoints plan better than the old points plan even though it took me a few days to adjust to the change. You get so used to knowing what the points value of your favorite foods are that it is strange to have to look them up again, but it was good in that it made me more aware of what I was eating and kick started my diet again. Teamed up with the high protein and low carb diet that I follow at the same time, I lost 15 pounds in less than five weeks! I’m sold on this one! If you are ever in Southend on Sea, Essex, UK, come to Paulette Blunden’s Wednesday night meeting and say hello. You might just change your life for the better!
