What would you say if I told you there was a diet that allows you to eat anything you want and still lose weight? Would you say I was crazy? That may be, but there is a program out there that millions of people, including myself, have had wonderful results from and we can still have that cheeseburger and fries…as long as you count the points! What is this marvel? It is the Weight Watchers program!
Like many Americans, I have tried and failed at several diets. There were some that worked, like an all protein diet, but one does get tired of eating only meat and eggs. Suddenly, the days of limiting and denying myself the foods I loved were over with one discussion over the telephone.
My wonderful mother started the Weight Watchers plan in August of 2009. Within a few weeks, she persuaded my sister and I to get on the program as she was having so much success. With me living 500 miles away from her, I did not attend the meetings, nor did I have a Weight Watchers leader guiding me, like my mom did, but just simply following the philosophy of the program, counting the points assigned to food and a little walk 3 times a week, I lost those pesky 10 pounds in a few weeks. However, this is nothing compared to my mother’s success on the program as she hit her goal of losing 50 pounds in March, 2010, just 7 months after beginning Weight Watchers.
How the program works is every food is assigned a point value based on the calories, fat and fiber. There are calculators online that figure out the point value for you. As you hit goals, you drop points you are allowed for the day. For instance, I started with 22 points per day and dropped to 20. Honestly, there were days when I had a hard time eating 20 points! You must eat those points, however, to lose weight. If you go under, you can actually gain pounds.
Weight Watchers is designed to be a lifestyle change, not a quick diet. Even though I do not religiously count points, I have changed my eating habits and feel confident I am eating healthier than I ever have before. If you follow the program, count points and get just a small amount of exercise, this program works wonders.
