I remember Daryl Hannah in the 1984 movie Splash, with Tom Hanks. It wasn’t one of the great cinematic achievements of the century, but it was really, really popular at the time; and so, of course, was Daryl Hannah. So what ever happened to her?
Daryl Hannah starred in a number of major movies during the 1980’s, including Blade Runner, Wall Street, and Roxanne. Although her popularity declined somewhat in the 1990’s, she was still active, starring in movies such as The Tie That Binds. In 2003, she starred in Kill Bill, and around that time she also appeared in a number of artsy films. [Source: Daryl Hannah – Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daryl_Hannah]
Then, at least in my cinema-going mind, she dropped off the face of the planet. I haven’t seen her in recent years. So what happened to her?
Before I get to the punchline on this story, let me just say that many celebrities have been arrested for their political activities. In the 1980’s, Amy Carter (Jimmy’s daughter), was arrested for protesting CIA recruitment activities. [Source: Amy Carter – Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_Carter]. So we shouldn’t be too critical of Daryl Hannah. All right, so here’s what happened:
Daryl Hannah has become a fairly extreme environmentalist, and runs a video blog on the subject (DHLoveLife). She was arrested in June 2006 when she chained herself to a tree to prevent the government from bulldozing a farm. Then, in June 2009, she was arrested again, this time for protesting mining in West Virginia. [Source: Daryl Hannah – Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daryl_Hannah]
Say what you want about Daryl Hannah’s methods of activism, but at least she is actively pursuing her social causes, and not simply pinning on a green ribbon at the Academy Awards. I understand that she is also active in the fight against sexual slavery throughout the world, so good for her.
