Having a son who gets invited to birthday parties, I am often faced with the difficult task to find a gift for boys. Now that he has become a teenager I have recently dealt with many tween boy’s birthday gifts. I find it so much easier to buy for my daughter’s friends. Girls are often more open about what they want or maybe just easier to read for me. When I ask boys what they want for their birthday they often reply with “I don’t know”. To finally answer the question “What do tween boys want for their birthday?” I have asked my son and several of his friends, ages 10 to 15, to give me some ideas of what they would like.
Before buying a birthday gift it is important to know what tween you are shopping for. Is it your grandson or someone you don’t know really well? What is your budget? Is this boy into skateboarding or football? Knowing the kid will definitely make it easier to choose a gift but if you don’t know him, you can use these suggestions as a guide.
These statements are based on the six tween and teen boys I have questioned.
This was the number one answer. Every single boy wants money for their birthday. So I asked what they would buy with that money.
Cell Phone Minutes
A few of the boys have pre-paid cell phones that require them to buy minutes regularly. Their minutes disappear at lightning speed when they text their friends. They were really excited about getting free minutes.
Pre-Paid Cell Phone
The two boys that didn’t yet have a cell phone wanted one for their birthday. You can buy pre-paid cell phones for $20 to $40 and let someone else add another $20 in minutes. Make sure to ask the parents first if this is something they would be ok with.
iTunes Gift Card
This is a great birthday gift for all tweens, boys and girls. At this age they follow trends and with the iTunes gift card they can download and listen to the latest music. It is like buying them their favorite songs without even knowing what they are. You really can’t go wrong with this one. You can purchase iTunes gift cards in many stores and online.
Tween boys often like to go and see the latest movies but at this age they usually can’t afford the tickets. Throw in a gift card for popcorn and a soda and you will have a very happy birthday boy.
