Miley Cyrus is going to turn 18 on November 23, 2010, meaning that the teen queen is going to have some tough career decisions to make as she legally becomes an adult. So what will Miley Cyrus do during her 18th year? Will she take a break from the spotlight, or do something to shock everyone? In order to see just how many different paths her career could take after Miley turns 18, here’s a look at what some other celebrities did the year they turned 18!
As she turns 18, Miley Cyrus will continue to garner comparisons to this pop princess, and with her edgier, evolving style, there’s a distinct possibility that Miley Cyrus could be spending her 18th year like Britney Spears. It was at age 18 that Britney Spears started her slew of memorable MTV VMA performances, stripping down to a nude bodysuit covered with sequins and showing the world that she was ready to shed her bubblegum pop image. So will Miley Cyrus also use the MTV stage as a way to show the world that she’s left Hannah Montana far behind? She’s already sported a more grown-up (and very feathery) look for her “Can’t be Tamed” video, so she’d have to do something really over-the-top to top the reactions to Britney Spears’ bold move.
Miley Cyrus can already relate to Lindsay Lohan when it comes to being a paparazzi target, but hopefully her career doesn’t take the turn Lindsay Lohan’s did during her 18th year. The actress and singer is still struggling to resurrect her career. Lilo ended up in the hospital after a bout with exhaustion and ended her relationship with starlet heartbreaker Wilmer Valderrama in 2004. She also reportedly began having difficulties on the set of her movie “Herbie: Fully Loaded” and was involved in a minor car crash, which she was later sued for. Lindsay would shock fans by sporting a new frail frame on the red carpet, and her problems just seemed to continue to pile up from 18 onward. So could 18 also be the beginning of the end for Miley? She continues to look healthy and happy and seems to be doing a good job juggling her career, relationships, and being a tabloid darling, so hopefully she can avoid a downward spiral after the big 1-8.
Few young celebrities have handled transitioning into adulthood in the spotlight quite as well as Taylor Swift. She started her 18th year off with a good deed, donating $250,000 to schools across the U.S. and giving her very special birthday gift, a pink pickup truck, to a charity. She then spent the year after she turned 18 on top of the world and the charts with a number 1 album. But that apparently wasn’t enough of an accomplishment for Taylor Swift; she also filmed two documentaries, “Once Upon a Prom” and “CMT Crossroads,” and worked with the Jonas Brothers on their 3D film. In short, Taylor just worked hard during her 18th year and kept things drama-free. So will Miley try to do the same, or will stirring up a little controversy just be too tempting for the teen star? Only time will tell, but it’s doubtful that Miley will manage to avoid the tabloids by going the “all work and no play” route during her 18th year.
Demi Lovato hasn’t been eighteen long, but her 18th year has already got off to a rather rough start. Demi started out the year with a bang by buying her family a new house on her birthday! But the “Sonny with a Chance” star’s life took a turn for the worse when her rep announced that Demi would be dropping out of her tour with the Jonas Brothers and entering a treatment center in order to get help with emotional and physical issues that she’d reportedly been dealing with for sometime. Of course it’s too early to say how this event will effect Demi Lovato’s future, but it’s safe to say that Miley wouldn’t want to go through a similar ordeal after she turns 18.
Mary-Kate Olsen is another celebrity that went through a tough time after turning 18. The “Full House” star had been in the spotlight much longer than Miley Cyrus when she and her twin sister took control of their media empire. However, being one of the richest women in the entertainment industry didn’t make life easier, as an emaciated Mary-Kate Olsen spent part of her 18th year undergoing treatment for an eating disorder. She and her sister had starred in the film “New York Minute” shortly before their 18th birthdays in 2004 as an attempt to start their movie careers as adults. However, the film flopped at the box office, and it seemed like the duo tried to disappear from the public eye for a few years. So could Miley Cyrus suffer a similar failure and shun the attention? Since she seems to enjoy the attention more than the Olsen twins, even if she faces flop after flop, Miley Cyrus probably won’t give up the spotlight without a fight.
Miley Cyrus can learn a lot from looking back at other celebrities that have turned 18 in the spotlight about the difficulty of transitioning into adulthood with the whole world watching. So will the pressure of becoming an adult get to the young star, or will she continue to shine on? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: whatever Miley Cyrus does during her 18th year is going to get plenty of attention.
