Desperate Housewives is a great show. This is because it is funny, it keeps you guessing, and they talk about many issues women have to go through in the household. While this show has been running for 7 seasons, there are many facts about its production that many people do not know about.
8 famous pieces of art in the opening credits
If you have been watching Desperate Housewives from its beginning seasons, its extended opening has many famous art pieces which put women in stereotypical roles. Some of these works of art include Adam and Eve by Lucas Cranach the Elder, American Gothic by Grant Wood, Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s soup can, and The Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck to name a few.
Bree’s Character is based on creators own mother
Creator Marc Cherry based Bree’s character on his own mother. In the episode where Bree’s son admitted to her that he was gay he even used the exact words his mother said to him when he came out; “I would love you even if you were a murderer”.
Tom Scavo was only a temporary character at first
Tom Scavo was rarely seen in the first season of Desperate Housewives since he was always away on business and was considered a guest star. It was not until season three that he signed a contract to be a main character since Tom and Lynette’s relationship was considered the most stable by its fans.
Each episode is filmed in 8 days
Although each episode is only about 45 minutes long, it usually takes approximately 8 days to film one episode. It is mostly filmed in the Universal studios back lot. This same set was used to shoot shows such as Leave it to Beaver and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Season 8 will be the last
While it is not yet written in stone, season eight is being speculated to be the last season of Desperate Housewives. Since Terri Hatcher who plays Susan Mayer and Felicity Huffman who plays Lynette are planning on leaving after season 8, creator Marc Cherry is now contemplating ending the show since he does not want to replace their characters.
As I stated previously, Desperate Housewives is an excellent show. Even if one has watched every episode, there are still so many more facts that they may not know about it. So keep watching and enjoying the mysteries on wisteria lane. J
