With the Christmas season coming up people are running through shopping malls ,trying to find the perfect gifts for their friends and loved ones. It is not diffucult to buy presents for kids because they usually make it more than clear what they want. However, pleasing grandparents might be more of a challange. People try to oversimplify the gifts all go all out ,and most of the time they get the gifts that the granparents will not be able to use. Although every older person is different, these are the gifts that the majority of the grandparents will have no use for.
Electronics can be tricky. Of course, you might like to suprise your grandma or grandpa with the newest gadget to make their lives more entertaining, this will more than likely not work out. The truth is ,that older people are not as interested in the newest electronic gadgets as is the younger generation. While you might think that you could never live without listening to music on the train or reading multiple books stuffed into on mini gadget, older people do not see this as a necessity. Also, they might have trouble trying to understand how these gadgets work and that creates unnecessary stress. Save your money and your grandparents patience and move away from the electronics section.
Clothing items including socks, scarfs, hats, and gloves seem like lovely gift ideas, because older people are known to have poorer circulation, and tend to get cold easier. But just imagine how you would feel if you opened a pretty gift box and found a pair of fluffy socks wrapped in bright tissue paper. Such gifts are very easy to get and they can be useful, but they do not show that you really though about a gift that would make your grandparents happy. Clothing should be given as a gift only if you are desperate and have not been able to find anything else.
Does you grandfather or grandmother live on their own? Do you want to surprise them and make them happy by giving them a pet? They probably will be suprised, but not neccessarily happy about this gift. Pets should not be given as gifts in general, let alone given to people without knowing if they want one or not. Before heading to the pet store, think of the worst case scenario: the grandparent will not like the pet, the pet will destroy their house, they will get sick and vet visits will require lots of money. Also, a pet like a large dog can require lots of exercise and training, and the grandparent might be too weak to take care of such animal. Do you still want to buy that cute german shepard for your grandma? Probably not. Think a lot before making this decision.
Medically related items are not the best gifts either. Anything from vitamins, no matter how fancy they might be, gadgets to measure things like blood pressure and so on are useful. These things are great, but unfortunately, they do not make good gifts. During holidays, people want to forget about all of the stressful things in their lives, and anything that can remind them of the illness or inability should not end up in that giftbox.
Do you feel like your grandparents need to get out their usual environment and experience something new? The lighbulb lights up and you automatically think- tickets. A trip to a cool country, a cruise, a concert ,sound really exciting, but this is somewhat similar to giving a pet as a present. You have to make sure that the grandparents really wants to visit that place or go to that concert. The truth is, that many grandparents do not have the same stamina as younger people, so an overseas trip can be too stressful. There are always exceptions to the rule, but generally, try to stay away from purchasing expensive trips or getting concert tickets, before making sure that the person who will receive them will appreciate them and be able to use them.
Giving gifts to grandparents shouldn`t be a very difficult task if you stay away from the five major groups of presents described above. A gift that will bring pleasure, laughter, memories will be exellent, so put in some time and energy and you will find something out there.
