If you are playing The Sims 3 (with or without the Generations Challenge in mind), you may occasionally wonder, “what should I be doing with all of my dead sims?” Most people don’t give careful consideration to their departed sims, and ghosts run free, people lose track of tombstones, and general mayhem can ensue. I’m a little more organized (read: anal) than that. Here’s some of my own personal ways of enjoying my game better in the aftermath of Sim death.
Idea #1: Keep the family together, but away from you. To do this, I created a cemetery devoted just to the deceased members of my family. All non-related Sims are deleted in the manage option when you click on the mausoleum in the cemetery. Why? I don’t need them, not attached to them, and after not so long there really are no shortage of ghosts. This story is all about my sims, their legacy and family… so who gives a care about the random townies? We don’t. It’s really nice to have a family dedicated plot. You can come and pay your respects and see/visit the ghosts of all who came before you. It really keeps things in the proper perspective.
Idea #2: Keep tombs off your lot (unless you are trying to help one of your sims see a specific ghost). Usually you will not want or need the hassle of a haunted house, and its novelty really does wear off quickly. Keep the dead with the dead and the living with the living, for the most part.
Idea #3: Rarely, and I mean rarely, allow a ghost to be a family member and stick around. They’ve already lived their lives and they had their chance. Why do they deserve another? Furthermore, ghosts can live a long, long time. This loses novelty quickly. If ghosts procreate, they can have ghost babies, and that too can lose its novelty. Before you make such a huge commitment, think twice about letting your house become a ghost household… because you’ll be in it for the long haul.
Three great ideas for better handling your Sims 3 Generations Challenge, or Sims 3 game in general: keep dead family members together but away from you, keep tombs off your lot, and keep ghosts off your lot– the last two at least 95% of the time. These tips will make things flow more smoothly and remove unnecessary complications from your playtime. For more tips which include special cheats, see Part 2 of this article, which can be found here.
