I have sat down in front of an MPC2000 many times trying to force the creativity to flow, due to something that I heard on the radio. Trying to keep up with what is hot at the moment is one of the non creative ways to go about creating from inspiration. It is all due to how the media has tended to over power true creativity. People could say it is big music corporations that have led us this way, and in part it is true. But, we as producers as well as the writers and artists control most of the power when we get inspired. No one else can convey the same message as an individual who is creating from there own experience.
Emotional driving tracks seem to have a resonance with the audience that hears it, that it captures and puts the listeners into a state of mind away from there moment of reality. It catapults the vibe of everyone that experiences it in an instant. That is why I love creating music, because it is a therapeutic treatment that could never be achieved by any substance.
When I want to create a hip hop musical track, I would start from the foundation of the music. Which for hip hop it’s the drum tracks, and then I incorporate the bass track. I love to experiment with different sounds, from synth boards to live instruments. There is no set ways to how creation comes and transform into the musical pieces that we enjoy. But, once you tend to have your own simple formula of creation, it is a way to let the creative juices just flow.
Do not overthink the track! Let it come naturally or it would not be in the form that you sub-consciously expected. You will feel like there is something off with the semi-finished or finished product. I have been there many times before, and it sometimes stalls my creativity for a couple of days. It does that to me for the simple reason of diluting my inspiration from the lack of following my heart.
So all in all I have to say the best experience to creating a hip hop track is to start from the base of a track, which is the drums and build from inspiration!
