If you are ever in Seattle and want to eat like the locals do, then you must climb all the way up to the top of the Queen Anne hill and check out a diner called The 5 Spot. Resting on the corner of Queen Anne Avenue and Galer Street, this neighborhood joint serves three square meals a day with friendly service and delicious food.
One thing that is quite unique about The 5 Spot is its roaming menu. Every few weeks, its menu updates with the nation’s other regional favorites. I’ve had Cajun, southwestern and San Francisco cuisines among other of America’s local eats.
To promote each region, The 5 Spot decorates the entire restaurant to match. If “Florida Keys” is the current regional cuisine on the menu, then you’ll see flamingos and key lime pie painted on the walls.
There is a constant menu at The 5 Spot too. This menu is a melting pot of America’s favorite regional foods. I’ve tried The Honey Stung Fried Chicken and Billy Bob’s Charbroiled Chops from “South of the Mason Dixon”, Simple Salmon from “Pacific Northwest”, and Reuben’s Reuben of “House Favorites”. Everything was hearty and delicious! But if you must ask, my favorite was definitely the chops. It’s juicy, smoky and tender – kind of just melts in your mouth.
On several occasions, I’ve had the pleasure to savor in The 5 Spot’s tasty deserts. Both the Turtle Sundae and the Gooey Butter Cake were unforgettably sweet, but the best one has to be the towering Four Layer Cake. After a comfy meal, that rich chocolate cake paired with freshly brewed coffee just sends me straight to heaven!
One thing I always pay attention to when reviewing a place is its customer service. The 5 Spot, being a local diner, gave me excellent service! The servers were attentive and friendly, truly defining The 5 Spot as a neighborhood joint.
When I first moved to Seattle, I always wondered why there is always a line outside The 5 Spot on any given weekend. Rain or shine, (well, mostly rain), there are always a slew of patrons waiting to get into the restaurant. Now, after having been there, I know why. They are waiting for good food, friendly service and to test out the latest regional menu The 5 Spot has to offer.
