Who was voted off Survivor: Nicaragua last night? Former NFL coach Jimmy Johnson was voted off Survivor during tribal council. So what happens to Survivor:Nicaragua? I hate to say it but it may be tune out time now that the former NFL coach has been voted off for me.
Survivor fans may stay tuned to the rest of the series but I found it very unfortunate that someone so compelling was voted off so early in the show. It’s the worst reality “send home” since Gene Simmons got kicked off The Celebrity Apprentice early. Just when you start hoping he’ll stick around, the other contestants sent Jimmy Johnson packing. Johnson admitted during tribal council that he was one of the weakest contestants remaining. Perhaps he was trying to downplay himself so he could continue to sneak by each week. Or maybe he was making an honest assessment of his abilities. Maybe the guy just wanted to come across as being the nice guy instead of having a huge celebrity target on his back. Maybe Jimmy Johnson just wanted to go home. Either way, the CBS reality show is left without one major reason many people had tuned in this season. The ratings winner is gone.
Survivor promotions producers didn’t do the show any favors by advertising the fact Johnson would play such a major role on the show this season. In fact, Johnson did play a major role for the 3 or so episodes he took part in. But his loss will be the shows loss. The only problem with having a celebrity on the show is that his or her departure could mean the loss of many viewers who were sampling the show. Jimmy Johnson didn’t last long enough for viewers outside the normal realm of Survivor to draw closer to the CBS reality show. There are some intriguing competitors left on the show–but I have a feeling the show will lose much of its pre-hype luster following the departure of Johnson.
Why was Jimmy Johnson voted off? As a viewer, I think Johnson had a huge and obvious target on his back from the start. Nobody wants a rich former coach and television analyst to win the big prize money. Some contestants on the show also felt his popularity would allow him to win during the final vote if he made the final two. Johnson told other contestants repeatedly that he only wanted to help them win the big prize. Was he sincere? Some of the other contestants didn’t believe that–and saw that as a Jimmy Johnson strategy.
Johnson, before being voted off last night, talked about how tough Survivor:Nicaragua was and compared it to training camps. If anything, Johnson added even more credibility to just how amazingly hard Survivor is for the contestants. It’s obviously a little more challenging that Johnson, a fan of the show, even had envisioned.
It’s unfortunate for fans who were tuning in to see the former coach that he is now no longer a member of the show. The big test will come during the upcoming ratings(minus Johnson). Will fans still tune in even though Jimmy Johnson was voted off last night on Survivor? That’s an interesting question. Only time will tell. As for Johnson, fans can still catch him as a weekly analyst on the FOX NFL pregame shows at 11am CST.
