I have a confession to make. Although I know I am not the demographics they are aiming for, but I am addicted to the CW’s “Vampire Diaries,” which comes on Thursday nights at 8 pm ET. The show, like much of CW’s lineup, is about high school, and the books the show is based on are written for teenage girls. However, the show is incredibly fun to watch. And though I certainly feel like Elena and Stefan belong together, Damon’s unrequited love for Elena breaks my heart. That said, here are what I believe are the five best Elena-Damon scenes from the show.
Let the right one in
In the first season, Stefan was kidnapped by a group of vampires who escaped their “eternal prison.” They beat him and planned on killing him. Elena and Damon planned a rescue attempt that was quickly thwarted when they realized the woman who owned the house was not able to allow Damon entrance. When he returned to the spot Elena was waiting, she ran out to see what he found out. It’s a scene right out of a romantic movie, with the pretty girl running to the hero in the rain. You can see the fear in her eyes for Stefan, and Damon kindly grabs her face, as he tells her he will find a way to save Stefan.
Miss Mystic Falls
After saving Stefan from the brood of vampires, he begins to succumb to literal bloodlust (it IS a show about vampires). Meanwhile, Elena is prepping for the “Miss Mystic Falls” pageant. Damon shows up and lets her know about Stefan’s addiction. Finally, she gets ready to make her appearance at the pageant, escorted by Stefan. Instead, he is a no-show, and Damon steps in and the two dance together to “All I need.”
Damon finally calls Elena on their relationship. Throughout the first season of “Vampire Diaries,” Elena and Damon had grown closer, until in the last episode of the first season Damon kisses what he believes is Elena. Little does he know, Katherine is back, and he kissed her. When he realizes it was Katherine and not Elena, he is shocked to hear Elena say that he should have known it wasn’t her because she wouldn’t kiss him. In a moment of shock and hurt, he lashes out and kills her brother. But it’s alright, because he gets better.
Bad moon rising
Two episodes later, Elena, Alaric, and Damon go to Duke University to find out about Katherine. While there, Damon saves Elena’s life from a crazed college student, who fears Elena is Katherine. The crew spend a good bit of time gathering information, and Damon finally lets Elena in on some of what he knows about Katherine. Towards the end of the night, he confesses that he wouldn’t be able to bear the thought that he lost her forever. A bit later, he comments on how well they worked together. He then tries to break through her emotional walls, and reconnect. Finally, though, when she forced him to confess that he didn’t know Jeremy was wearing a ring that would allow him to survive near death experiences, she confesses that they are threw for good.
Because everyone in this show has to be kidnapped or killed several times a season, Elena is kidnapped by vampires hoping to sacrifice her to end the curse that keeps vampires in doors during the daylight. Stefan and Damon take on one of the most powerful vampires out there to save her. After saving her, Damon goes to see her at the end of the night. He finally confesses that he loves her. Then, though, he makes her forget he said anything because she loves his brother.
Damon admits in the last episode that he doesn’t deserve Elena. And I truly believe she and Stefan are perfect for each other, with the weird exception of the fact that Stefan is dead, but nobody is perfect. Still, this is a love triangle that goes right up there with Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot. Hopefully, it has a happier ending than that classic story. Somehow, I doubt it though. These stories rarely end happily.
