Being a single mom is awesome. I haven’t always felt this way, in fact I felt very ashamed and alone for a long period of time. As the months have gone by I have found myself adapting to the fact that I am a single mom and that it can be very rewarding.
One of the first things that I did when I became a single mom was to plan a lot of adventures with my son. Last year we had a mission to go see all of the Christmas lights that we could see. We went to major displays that were open to the public as well as driving around local neighborhoods to see how individuals decorated their houses. My son and I had a ball, we had our hot cocoa in hand and listened to Christmas music and just enjoyed spending time together.
Being a single mom also opened the doors for us to make new friends. I had friends before but they we unable to relate to some of the day to day struggles and situations that I was faced with. I found other single moms in places like parks, church groups, library events and by even attending singles meetings. It paid off by putting myself out there to make new friends as we have been able to schedule play dates and even traded off some babysitting.
There are some financial perks that go along with being a single mom. There are tax breaks and there are also grants that can help you get back in school to better your education. Depending on your personal financial situation there is also government assistance as well.
The one thing that I like best about being a single mom is the fact that I get to instill my values to my son. I do not have to worry about him getting confused by having parents of two different faiths, I can also teach him how to do everyday household chores like cooking and cleaning and that will help him grow into a independent young man who will not have to rely on a woman to do it for him.
The most awesome thing about being in a situation where there is a single mom and a single dad is we both get to enjoy doing special things with our son that the other parent may or may not do. I live for movie night with my son, we enjoy snacks and curling up under the blanket and his dad has sports says with him.
Overall I would say being a single mom is awesome and it has made me a stronger person and turned me into the woman I am today.
